At 11:30am local time, North Korea launched its long-range satellite, illustrating the ability to fire similar long-range missiles if they so wish in the future. At this stage, most parties believe it to be a long-range satellite as opposed to an actual missile yet no one is certain whether the satellite was indeed successful as the US, Japan and South Korea have been unable to track this object in space. North Korea, unsurprisingly, has called the launch a “success”.
Condemnation and concern has been brisk from the international community, particularly from South Korea, the US, China and Japan. Apparently, the first stage of the booster rocket fell into the Sea of Japan (East Sea) and the second stage fell east of Japan into the Pacific Ocean. As a result, mainland Japan was left unscathed and ultimately did not attempt to shoot down the rocket as proposed.
Everyone now waits and sees what the next step will be.
