Song of the Day – “Low” by Silverchair

April 27, 2009

We just had a Song of the Day yesterday but, gosh darn it, I’m gonna put another one up today! Today’s Song of the Day comes from the Novocastrian trio, Silverchair. Band members, Daniel, Chris and Ben first burst onto the music as bright-eyed young teens with their initial hit, “Tomorrow” having initially been picked by national radio station Triple J after winning a nationwide talent competition. Many thought these young, Nirvana wannabes were a one album wonder and would crash and burn before their teens were over, a la many bands before them. But, little did they know the genius lurking inside the band in the form of their frontman, lead guitarist and lyricist, Daniel Johns. Daniel Johns, I am certain will go down as one of the greatest musical talents to have risen from the southern hemisphere before his career’s up. For a group of young men, Johns in particular, to have encountered, endured and thrived through so much at such a young age is testament to their collective genius and unique, close bond as lifelong mates and band members.

Today’s track, “Low” is a beautiful, melancholy little number from their latest album, “Young Modern” released in 2007. Previously, the band had gone on a two and a half year hiatus with each member pursuing different paths and interests in the interim – Johns teamed up with producer and mate, DJ Paul Mac to record a brilliant album as The Dissociatives. Many feared the group would never reunite and proceed on their separate ways. However, all fears were cast aside once “Young Modern” was released to critical acclaim. Their record sales may not be what they once were and they have long lost their initial teenie-bopper base, but this trio is like a fine wine, it purely gets better with age, and most astute music followers realise this – many having grow up with the band.

It’s been a pleasure to watch this group of men mature and grow as musicians and individuals, and produce greater music each record they make. May many further albums follow. Yes, they are one of my favourite bands as you can tell! And, with any further a due, a live performance of “Low”.

Enjoy!
